The Minimum Tax is a mandatory baseline tax payment required by the NBR for any individual whose taxable income exceeds the tax-free threshold, regardless of how much their actual calculated tax comes out to be after claiming investment rebates. Even if your extensive investment rebates bring your mathematical tax liability down to zero, you are still legally obligated to pay this minimum floor amount.
The exact amount of the minimum tax is geographically determined based on the taxpayer's residential location to reflect the varying economic capacities across the country. Typically, taxpayers residing in the Dhaka North, Dhaka South, and Chattogram City Corporation areas are subject to a minimum tax of BDT 5,000. Those living in other city corporations across Bangladesh must pay at least BDT 4,000, while taxpayers residing in Pourashavas (municipalities) or rural areas outside of any city corporation have a minimum tax obligation of BDT 3,000. It is important to remember that if your calculated tax is actually higher than this floor, you must pay the higher calculated amount.
